Sample Case Studies: Enterprise Projects
Telstra IP WANs (Operational Support Systems and System Assurance) Technical Governance
SYPAQ was engaged by Telstra to set up the high level planning and governance framework (i.e. Systems Engineering Management Plan) for the Customer Network Management Project that facilitated the rollout and performance management of managed Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for Telstra's corporate clients based on the Netcracker and HP OpenView products. This also included project cost and schedule analysis, business analysis, test planning and execution, risk management steerage, system integration planning necessary to integrate new design and inventory management system, and an event management system, with multiple Telstra legacy systems. This project deployed applications that enabled:
- Capture of customer requirements and matching of associated Telstra infrastructure for Corporate VPN solutions; and
- End to end monitoring and assurance of Corporate VPN solutions.
Telstra Broadband Multi-Services Project Governance
SYPAQ was engaged by Telstra to set up the high-level planning and governance framework (Systems Engineering Management Plan – configuration, risk, requirements, test and integration management) and requirements engineering for the Broadband Multi-Services Project, which facilitated the rollout of high capacity broadband and associated services.
Telstra - Linx Online Ordering System - Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis
SYPAQ assisted Telstra with the Wholesale Infrastructure review of the Linx Online Ordering System (LOLO) Reliability, Maintainability and Availability (RMA). The LOLO operational availability did not meet user requirements. From a user perspective, the LOLO experience encompasses the End to End (E2E) functionality delivered to them via a WEB browser. The functionality that was delivered via LOLO relied on many components of Telstra infrastructure, some which is shared with other users, some which was unique and some which were previously only Telstra internal systems. The E2E view of LOLO was complex with many different interfaces.
The SYPAQ Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology was used to document the LOLO design behaviour when exception events occurred. The SYPAQ Reliability Centred Maintenance Analysis methodology was also used to determine maintenance requirements for a particular design implementation. Both of these analyses focussed on the consequences of failure as the key to determining whether LOLO designed behaviours and failure event indications were consistent with the systems user requirements. The consequences of failure on user functionality were used to decide whether LOLO performance was acceptable. The information was used to define the support capabilities (e.g. monitoring, alarms, procedures etc) and resources required to restore full functionality.

Sensis Technology Horizon E-commerce Project
This undertaking involved the architectural development for the Sensis Technology Horizon E-commerce project. SYPAQ determined the strategic technology blueprint, and performed over the horizon trends and analysis, to address the business functions identified as required in response to the client’s strategic business directions. Content Management formed a key component of its strategic technology blueprint.
This undertaking also included analysis and preparation of detailed Business Requirements Specifications, identification and assessment of implementation options, preparation of feasibility assessment including development of cost estimates and Return On Investment assessment as major input to the Business Case.
“Sensis 12451 & 12456” Directory Assistance
SYPAQ provided Test Management for Sensis. This included developing and implementing a testing Strategy for “Sensis 12451 & 12456” Directory assistance. The technologies included MS Windows NT Call Centre Client/ SUN UNIX Server application, Web based data management interface, Java web based Directions application interfacing to a Geo-spatial Linux platform and Oracle Database.
Hutchison Data Warehouse Test Management
SYPAQ supported Hewlett Packard (HP) in the management of the testing phases the Hutchison Data Warehouse Project. This included leading and participating in on site workshops for testing, requirements clarification and design validation in collaboration with Hutchison and HP staff. SYPAQ also developed Test Cases, Test Strategy, Test Summary Reports, Detailed and Master Test Plans for this project.
ICO MEO Satellite Telephone System
SYPAQ provided consulting and contracting services to NEC Australia in the development of their ICO MEO Satellite Telephone System. SYPAQ provides NEC with a number of highly skilled specialists in a broad range of disciplines, including project management, system architecture and design, configuration management, software development, and system integration and test. The technology utilised includes GSM, ISDN, Protocol Stacks, Network Management Systems, and LAN/WAN.
Specific activities included:
- Design and specification of new Stage 1 functionality;
- Management of System Specification and various sub-system specifications;
- Full System Engineering traceability from Customer Specification to System design and Sub-system design and full traceability at each step;
- Complex Sub system specification preparation of the TNM;
- Design and modification of SS7 signals to accommodate timing problems and functions;
- Formulation of Problem Reporting system for software sub-contractors;
- Formulation of algorithms for resource management and low level specifications;
- Tailor and ensure conformance to relevant design standards for reviews and audits; and
- Ensure traceability and documentation trails fully addressed and managed for design changes.
Achievements included:
- Investigated, designed and documented various options to incorporate required system changes to existing functionality for discussion and presentations;
- Completed allocated design work on SS7 message changes to incorporate Stage 1 design changes on A and A’ interfaces;
- Formulated algorithm changes to manage resources and slot timing internal to the TNM;
- Formulated message and payload changes to incorporate design changes and new functionality, and to fully specify and trace the changes;
- Completed documentation detailing design changes to TNM Stage 0 to enable Stage 1 functionality in various forms of hardware;
- Presented design aspects to ICO Project Office Management during a Preliminary Design Review;
- Performed preliminary reviews and audits with the client to ensure needs were fully addressed.
China Keno Rollout – Life Cycle Costing
SYPAQ was engaged by Tabcorp to undertake Lifecycle Cost Analysis for various technology options for the rollout of 60,000 Keno Terminals across China. SYPAQ provided a Keno Terminal Life Cycle Costing Model and User Manual, which enabled Tabcorp complete “what if” analyses and implement smart technology decisions. The purpose of the model was to forecast (over a ten year period, by quarter) the terminal net present cost by entering in variables that described the terminal and support model. The model allowed users to change the values of the variables and model different terminal solutions to derive Net Present Cost for specific terminal types.
Commonwealth Bank Internet and Telephone Banking Services
SYPAQ provided Project Management and Systems/Software Engineering consulting services to the Commonwealth Bank at its Sydney headquarters. The technology was a mix of mainframe and Client/Server systems delivering retail and on-line Internet and telephone banking services.
